This is another 'Five Monkeys' book from the beloved series by Eileen Christelow. Like Five Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, this is an adorably illustrated ebook based on a print title published in 2000. When I checked the Amazon.com reviews for the print version I found lots of 4 & 5 star ratings. In digital form, these books are transformed with sound, interactivity and text that highlights as it is read.
In this story, the monkeys are bored. When they tell Mama that they have nothing to do, she responds by telling them that Grandma Bessie is coming for lunch and they can help tidy the house. First they clean up their room, then the bathroom, then they even beat the rugs. When they are all done, to get them out of her hair, Mama suggests the monkeys pick berries for lunch. The monkeys get very dirty down by the swamp picking berries, though, so when they tramp back through the house & wash up, they leave the house a disaster. Just then grandma arrives.
Like the Seuss books (also by Oceanhouse Media), this book is interactive in a way that enhances early reading skills. Most images (monkeys, household items, plus actions like 'scrub'), can be tapped to hear the words aloud while the word briefly appears over the illustration. For example, touch the vacuum and the word "vacuum" appears and is spoken aloud by the narrator (along with a motor sound effect). You can even 'count' the monkeys on nearly every page by tapping their heads in order from right to left.
The book is nicely narrated with monkey sounds in the background. It has easy swipe-style page turning and a nice array of settings, although the interactive elements have sound even with the 'sound' setting on 'off' so for silent reading time, mute the device. This is a great title for pre-readers, reading learners and children up to age 8 to read to themselves.

The five little monkeys are bored one day. "We're bored. There is nothing to do!" they say. Mama responds by suggesting they help get the house ready for a visit from grandma for lunch. She has them clean their room, scrub the bathroom and beat out the rugs. Then she sends them down to the swamp to pick berries. When they are done, they march inside to wash up, leaving dirt everywhere they just cleaned.
As the monkeys greet grandma outside on the path, Mama tells her that they have picked berries and cleaned the house for her arrival. Much to their surprise, they all find the house is actually a disaster. The five little monkeys seem perplexed ... who got our house all dirty, they wonder? Mama & Grandma Bessie exchange amused and knowing looks.
