I love this series by Eileen Christelow, but I always think, "Poor Mama!" Funny & full of fun plot twists plus a surprise ending, this title has it all. In this story, Mama is taking her brood on a shopping trip for new school clothes. As they arrive at the store, she says, "Stick with me and don't go wandering off!"
The monkeys wander off, of course, making for a fun story with lots of interesting math. Mama counts the monkeys several times during the story, never quite getting things to add up to five. Fewer monkeys is a big concern and sends Mama on a frantic search to find the missing monkeys ... but what could it mean when she counts more than five?!? This is one funny and engaging story that children (and parents) will love!
From the beloved series by Eileen Christelow, this is an adorably illustrated app based on a print title published in 2007. In digital form, these books are transformed with sound, interactivity and text that highlights as it is read. Like the Seuss books (also by Oceanhouse Media), this book is interactive in a way that enhances early reading skills. Most images (monkeys, clothing, the saleslady), can be tapped to hear the words aloud while the word briefly appears over the illustration.
For example, touch Mama in any scene to see "Mama" appear while spoken aloud by the narrator. The book is nicely narrated with monkey sounds in the background. It has easy swipe-style page turning and a nice array of settings, although the interactive elements have sound even with the 'sound' setting on 'off' so for silent reading time, mute the device. Overall, this is a great title for pre-readers, reading learners and children up to age 8 to read to themselves. Recommended!
All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

The 5 little monkeys are going shopping for back-to-school clothes! At first the monkeys stay together, while mama shares her long list with the saleslady. But soon, despite being warned not to 'wander off', Mama is having trouble keeping all five monkeys together!
At first there is one missing monkey and Mama heads off to find the errant child. When she returns, however, 2 other monkeys leave to get a drink of water from the fountain. Now she has only 3 monkeys! These shenanigans continue, including a few times when several new monkeys appear. Each time Mama does some mental math, subtracting the number of monkeys from her expected number (+ a friend or 3).
Soon the shopping is done and Mama has had the saleslady ring up all her purchases for new school clothes. To make sure she doesn't leave with everyone she came with, Mama has the saleslady make an announcement asking, "Will all the little monkeys who are missing their mamas, papas, little sisters or brothers please come to the children's clothing department RIGHT NOW!"
Now everyone has their 'monkeys' and is ready to go find the car. As they drive away, Mama does one last count ... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ... "How can THAT be?" The End.
