Horton Hatches the Egg - Dr. Seuss

June 21, 2012

By: Carisa Kluver

The Digital Media Diet

I meant what I said and I said what I meant says Horton!

Horton Hatches the Egg makes a great transition from print to digital, with the beautiful sketches from Dr. Seuss's 1940 title coming to life despite the limited color palate of this title (it uses only two colors, common to early picture books where every color added great cost to printing). This title came before the more famous 1954 edition, Horton Hears a Who!, and both titles served as inspiration for the musical Seussical, which premiered in 2000.

Many readers will be more familiar with the later story of Horton and the bird Mayzie, involving a whole world of little 'whos' but this title is a great 'prequel'. Many kids today will also have seen the popular 2008 movie version of Horton Hears a Who!, giving them a connection to this earlier Horton story. Here we find Horton willing to sit on Mayzie's egg, despite great hardships, while she goes on vacation. However, when she returns, Horton is not so easily convinced that he has no connection to the hatchling about to emerge. His efforts pay off when the creature is not quite what Mayzie was expecting.

For the read-a-long effect, each word is highlighted as it is read. Tap on any word to hear it spoken, even in the 'read-it-myself' mode. There is a nice home button, but with a title over 60 pages, a page guide is the only thing that really stands out for a future update. Although each page is essentially a still image, many pages begin by panning over Seuss' classic original artwork, zooming in and out to show off each segment of text, a nice semi-animated style.

There is also some very light animation in the form of rain falling, a nice addition. These omBooks of Dr. Seuss titles have no real animation, otherwise, although most of the items pictured in the story react to a light tap with a visual image of the word with accompanying audio. Overall, this is a wonderful addition to any app book library - particularly for Seuss fans. Recommended!

Story Synopsis - Horton Hatches the Egg - Dr. Seuss

Plot synopsis courtesy Wikipedia:

The book concerns an elephant named Horton, who is convinced by Mayzie (a lazy, irresponsible bird) to sit on her egg while she takes a short "break", which in actuality ends up being Mayzie's permanent relocation to Palm Beach.

Naturally, the absurd sight of an elephant sitting atop a tree makes quite a scene – Horton is exposed to the elements, laughed at by his jungle friends, captured by hunters, forced to endure a terrible sea voyage, and finally placed in a traveling circus. However, despite his hardships and Mayzie's clear intent not to return, Horton refuses to leave the nest through all of these, because he insists on keeping his word ("I meant what I said and I said what I meant, And an elephant's faithful, one hundred per cent!")

The traveling circus ends up visiting near Mayzie's new Palm Beach residence; she returns to the circus once the egg is due to hatch, and demands its return without offering any reward for Horton. However, when the egg hatches, the creature that emerges is an "elephant-bird" cross between Horton and Mayzie, and Horton and the baby are returned happily to the jungle, rewarding Horton for his persistence, while Mayzie is punished for her laziness by ending up with nothing.
