Just Me and My Mom - Little Critter

A day out with just Mom ... a special day indeed!

Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Mayer was published in print in 1990. It is a beloved story about 'Little Critter' and his mom spending the day together in the city. They take the train and visit lots of places where Little Critter innocently tests his mother's patience. He touches exhibits at the museums, gets them kicked out of a nice restaurant and even loses their train tickets. In the end, though, Little Critter snuggles close to his mom and falls asleep happily on the way home, cherishing the day out with just him and his mom.

Many readers have asked, "What kind of animal is Little Critter?" According to Wikipedia, Mercer Mayer did not specify which type of animal the Little Critter is, but, "he resembles a hedgehog, hamster or guinea pig." So, basically he's a rodent ... although a rather lovable one! Over 200 books have been released in this popular series, not to mention a whole line of toys, dvds and other products.

This book is a sweet little story that has gotten an avg. of 4.4 stars from 18 reviews at Amazon.com. The digital version adds a new twist, keeping track as the reader tries to find all the little frogs (19 in all) hidden on almost every page. These games are a highlight for my preschooler whenever we read the Little Critter book apps. As a parent, I really appreciate that the interactivity is well integrated into the story while also rewarding the child for paying attention.

Like the Seuss books (also by Oceanhouse Media), this book is interactive in a way that enhances early reading skills. Most images (of mom, Little Critter and the people & things around them), will name themselves aloud while the word briefly appears over the illustration. For example, touch the hat on Mom's head and the word "hat" appears and is spoken aloud by the narrator.

For young readers and pre-readers, the text also highlights as the narrator says each word. The delightful child narrator is also easy to understand. I particularly liked the child narration since the story is told in the first-person by Little Critter. Overall this is a cute book and a great read just in time for Mother's Day.

Story Synopsis - Just Me and My Mom - Little Critter

Little Critter and his mom go on a special trip together. They first get tickets for the train, but when the ticket taker comes by, Little Critter has lost the tickets so his mom has to pay again. Then they get to the city and Little Critter holds his mom's hand (so she won't be scared, he says). When they go to the natural history museum, Little Critter gets into trouble (he puts on a display costume and touches a dinosaur egg). They have similar problems at the Aquarium and Art Museum. Their nice lunch is also ruined by Little Critter - they end up eating at a hot dog stand after getting kicked out of the restaurant. Then they go to a fancy clothing store where Little Critter is fitted for an outfit. He wants a toy but 'it's time to go'. The taxi to the train station drives fast and Little Critter thinks it's fun. When they get to the station and buy their tickets, mom decides to hold onto them this time. On the train ride home, Little Critter gets sleepy, thinking about what a fun day he had with 'just me and my mom'.
