Hop on Pop is a fun book app, pairing great sound effects and narration with the whimsical illustrations that make Seuss books instant classics. Focusing on basic phonics through the use of rhyme, this story is one of the first Seuss classics. All of these early readers were designed with sight words only. Hop on Pop was even subtitled, "The Simplest Seuss for Youngest Use".
In print, this book has been a favorite of toddlers and their parents since its publication in 1963. Like the other titles from Oceanhouse Media, this book has an eye on educational enhancements. For the read-a-long effect, each word is highlighted as it is read. Tap on any word to hear it spoken, even in the 'read-it-myself' mode.
The cover of this title has an animated image of poor 'Pop' being hopped on, but the rest of the book is not animated. Each page does begin by panning over Seuss' classic original artwork, though, zooming in and out to show off each segment of text. This creates a nice semi-animated style that increases engagement with movement and the chunking of text. For interactivity, most of the items pictured in the story react to a light tap with a visual image of the word with accompanying audio (for example, tap the cup and the word "cup" appears with audio saying “cup”). If the image tapped is also represented in the text on that page, the word will highlight as well.
in digital form this Seuss book app is even more fun that it was in print. It's also one of the shorter Seuss books, making it a nice bedtime read. I particularly like having it narrated given the tongue-twister quality of all the rhymes. Overall, this is a must for any digital collection, especially those focused on learner readers. Highly recommended!

Hop on Pop is a 1963 children's picture book by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel). It was published as part of the Random House Beginner Books series, and is subtitled "The Simplest Seuss for Youngest Use". It contains several short poems about a variety of characters, and is designed to introduce basic phonics concepts to children. [Wikipedia]
This simple rhyming book for learner readers is aimed specifically at children learning to read. These Seuss titles were developed in an interesting way. Apparently, a list was compiled of 348 words that were important for first-graders to recognize, then cut to 250 words and the task was to write a book using only those words. They wanted Seuss to "bring back a book children can't put down." Nine months later, using 236 of the words given to him, he completed The Cat in the Hat. [Source: Wikipedia]
