An exceptionally fun & imaginative exploration of the alphabet ...

Metamorphabet is a app about the alphabet. Kids can touch or drag a letter on each “flashcard” to watch it morph into a sequence of images that begin with the letter’s sound. For instance, poke the letter the letter B and watch it grow a beard. Prod it again and a beak pops out. Tap the beak and a bevy of beautiful bugs fly out. The transformations are wacky, humourous and totally engaging.

How it works

Children work their way from A to Z. Touch a letter and the first transformation is subtle – it becomes a three dimensional and you hear the name of the letter (heralded by a cymbal and drum). Touch it again and the letter transforms into something completely unexpected: the letter A, for example, will never become an apple but it will grow antlers and amble down the screen. The morphing flows sequentially – prompted by a child’s taps. F first turns into a foot, then sprouts feathers and grows a fan.

Despite all the morphing on the screen, the app maintains its focus on the letter and the sound it makes. As the letter morphs into objects or actions that begin with the letter – the words for those sounds or actions are spoken and appear on the screen. So, when the letter “I” turns into an iceberg, the word, “iceberg”, will be spoken and appears clearly on the screen. This is important because children can continue to associate the shape and sound of the letter with the fun on the screen.

As letters transform, they can be tapped and dragged about for more fun. When the letter J eventually turns into jellyfish, the jellyfish can be dragged around the screen. When the letterD turns into a door in the sky, daydreams can be dragged out (the daydreams are animal-shaped clouds). When a letter has completed its sequence of transformations, the next letter discreetly busts through the screen ready to be tapped (or ignored if the letter on hand is just too much fun).

Is this app good for my kids?

This is the most engaging and unique apps I’ve come across. Here’s why you should add this app to your library without further ado:

  • It’s a great example of out-of-the-box thinking and learning: by the time the letter C turns into a caterpillar in a car fitted with cones, you may never want to go back to those traditional “A is for Apple” picture books.
  • Nothing is predictable: when the letter N grows a nose, a neck, then reveals many windows filled with neighbours, you can’t help but wonder what’s next
  • It’s isn’t just about the alphabet: this app is about having fun with words. It revels in the relationship between letters and the words they make – lending charisma and meaning to ordinary words like “amble”, “inflate”, and “loop”.
