Where Will I Go?

June 16, 2015

By: Rachel J.

A simple, sweet story that encourages an adventurous mindset in preschoolers.

The Smart Apps for Kids staff crosses several state, country and continent borders. Where Will I Go tells the tale of a tot and her (or his, depending on selected settings) dad perusing a museum and the dad describing places and things that can be learned there. The pictures depict all kinds of imaginative adventures, ranging from visiting the Great Wall of China to the crowned jewels in London.

The story begins with your tot choosing their own main character, Lewis or Maddi, depending on your kiddo's preference.  The story can either be narrated or read aloud. In the narration setting, each word is highlighted as it as read. This a non-negotiable for me when it comes to book apps and I was thrilled to see it in this setting. I would love to see it added into the "read alone" section, making the app more accommodating for emergent learners.

Each page has basic interactive features, which is a strong reason that any book can become an app--interaction. Most of the interaction is basic cause and effect. I would be more encouraged to see the interactions take part of the story, or be required to move a story along. An added feature is a hunt for Mason, the spunky white puppy that appears on every page. When your child finds and presses all 24 Mason dogs, it unlocks a fun bonus game that can be enjoyed when the story is over.

The drawings and narration voices in this app are absolutely adorable and add to the quality of the app. It's a solid app at 3.5 stars, but because the app market is so full of quality story apps, this one in particular was a bit too basic in light of the others to stand out from the crowd. A $3.99 sticker price is high for the content received-- additional story text, interactive features, or even quick pop-up blurbs that featured information about each country listed would improve the overall rating.

Still, parents and educators looking for a solid e-book may find something perfect in Where Will I Go? and it's definitely worth a look.

Story Synopsis - Where Will I Go?

From iTunes:
Where Will I Go? is an interactive children's storybook app about the joys of travel and adventure. Narrated by world famous actor Brian Blessed, it takes a colourful (and educational) l look at the many exciting corners of the globe and asks, 'Where do you want to go?'.

The story follows a dad and his child (you choose the gender of the child) as they wander around a museum's international exhibit and daydream of the adventures the child may get up when older. It ignites a sense of adventure in the reader and introduces them to the joys of travel, while celebrating the special bond that exists between a father and his child.

Where Will I Go? is the sequel to the popular What Will I Be? app, which received multiple awards and glowing reviews, such as this one from Famigo.com: 'We thought the app was perfect'.

Full of interactivity to bring the story to life, there's a find-the-dog dog game throughout the story (find every dog to unlock a bonus memory game), as well as plenty of animations and interactions.

All that's required to enjoy this app is the spirit of adventure and a big imagination. So let's get going shall we?
