Cooper Edens Night Rainbow

A classic comes to the tablet with unique interactivity ...

Based on the 1970's classic, Cooper Eden's Night Rainbow is as beautiful as it is lyrical. Gorgeous illustrations from the original art-book are paired with Eden's poetic lines. The story itself consists of uplifting responses to a series of melancholy questions, like "If the sky falls tomorrow ... Have clouds for Breakfast," and "If night falls ... Use the stars for Streetlights."

These whimsical passages are touching and touchable. Set up more like an iBook than a typical app, readers scroll by swiping with a pageguide bar at the bottom of the screen. Images are not overly animated, but they do move, allowing younsters to sweep the pictures into place with nice touches like a fluttering butterfly.

Downsides of this lovely title are purely technical. The pageguide is nice, but doesn't easily allow the reader to return to the beginning or show page numbers. Music and sound effects are well placed but there is no narration. The biggest drawback for reading with youngsters is that there are several links (at the end) that leave the app without any parental gate.

Overall, Night Rainbow is a satisfying read that translates well to the tablet. The art-quality illustrations are less rich than in the paper-version but the interactive and animated elements add something very special to this classic book. Appealing to both parents and children, this title is also a favorite bedtime story.

Story Synopsis - Cooper Edens Night Rainbow

From iTunes:

Animated. Interactive. Playful. “Cooper Edens Night Rainbow” recreates a classic with touch-book magic for kids 4 and older (even much older).

Beloved by generations of kids (and adults), Cooper Edens’ “If You’re Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow” has been re-imagined as an app created especially for the kid-friendly iPad.

“Cooper Edens Night Rainbow” gives youngsters and parents (and grandparents) a chance to share the experience of reading this touching, surprising book.

“Cooper Edens Night Rainbow” speaks to the hearts and imaginations of youngsters and adults. The potent blend of art and words soothes frazzled emotions and tickles budding imaginations. Somehow, it pulls off the trick of being both whimsical and profound. Recognized by the Museum of Modern Art, print editions have sold more than a million copies.

This new version for the iPad tablet transforms the words and art into a glowing, playful flow of images and ideas, supported by a dramatic, emotive soundtrack. It’s a work to be explored and experienced in a new way every time it’s opened.
