Does your child love to study nature and learn how plants and animals interact? iBiome Wetlands shows how to create a virtual wetland environment that is teeming with many different forms of life. This fascinating app demonstrates the step-by-step development of the biome and allows your child to become part of the process. Its creative use of tablet technology and its solid content earn it a TOP PICK for Fun Educational Apps.
iBiome Wetlands is a new science app from Springbay Studio for the iPad. It is the first title in a new app series designed to explore different biomes, the unique communities in nature that exist on Earth.
Have a look:
A character named Professor Bio introduces the app and is the source of information in iBiome Wetlands. With his guidance, children, ages 9-11, learn about the interrelationships that exist in the wetlands. The first building blocks are elements from the environment (sun, water, mud). Next come the small living plants and algae that grow and support life. These become the food source for the insects, and they in turn become food for the larger animals, the predators. Everything is connected and must be in balance in order for the biome to thrive.
There are four different Bio Domes included in iBiome Wetlands:
Crazy Webs provide the hands-on experience at each step. They show which element is part of the environment, which one is a producer, which is a predator, and which is prey. Slowly the biome comes together as elements are added, from the simplest plants to the top predators. It is possible to earn badges (with fun names like Triple Jump, Curious Digger, and Super Challenger) by putting the parts together in the correct way to show how they interact in a real biome.
It is possible to use iBiome Wetlands as an introduction to wetlands, focusing on the Crazy Webs and the Bio Dome. More serious students have the option of digging deeper into the text to learn more about each element and see the importance of the subtle changes that occur. Having these options makes the app appealing to students of different ability levels.
It took me a while to appreciate the overall effect of creating each BioDome. The actions seem repetitive and not very interesting at first, but as the biome fills up, its complexity is revealed. The use of digital technology enhances this effect and helps it seem like a “little world” is being created right before your eyes. iBiome Wetlands offers interesting content, great visual appeal, and an intuitive user interface. These are the features that make it our latest TOP PICK in the category of science apps for children.
