Pico the Penguin is a simple, point-and-touch app for very young children, ages 2-5. The object of the game is to lower Pico’s temperature in some very warm places, using imaginative ways to cool him down. It begins with a cute introduction, which is helpful the first time the app is opened. Pico has the travel bug. Your child joins him as he goes in search of new adventures, but he must be careful. Pico must stay cool, because after all, he’s a penguin. His journey starts when you choose a destination on the world map.
At each stop, he enlists the help of a local animal friend to help him stay chilled and out of the sun. Children as young as 2 can put on Pico’s hat or help the elephant give him a nice, cool shower. As your child repeats the action, his temperature starts to drop, until the color on the thermometer changes to a shivery blue, meaning that Pico is well-chilled.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked:
The design and animation of Pico the Penguin meet expectations, with colorful and age appropriate animated characters, jazzy background music, and lots of sound effects. I would have liked to see more details about the locations, in order to help differentiate them from one another. The information link (accessible on the title screen) provides directions along with a few hints about some of the stopovers.
In a Nutshell:
Pico the Penguin is a simple game app for beginners, with a straightforward user interface and limited content. It features likable characters doing funny actions. Parents should be aware that some of the activities can be finished with just a few repetitions, while others take an extremely long time to complete; this inconsistency could lead to frustration.
At the time of this review, Pico the Penguin provides a safe, secure environment, with no third party ads or links to social media or the internet. A complete privacy policy is available on the developer's website.
