Does the Queen Brush Her Teeth?

February 6, 2011

By: Carisa Kluver

The Digital Media Diet

This is a really fun story that is told in the first person by a young girl named Tilly McKnee. She is having tea with the Queen [of England] one rainy day. Suddenly her eyes are drawn to the Queen's teeth and she thinks to herself, "Arghhhhhhhhh the Queen has yellow teeth!" This begins a story where Tilly daydreams about whether or not the Queen brushes her teeth.

Tilly's imagination goes from silly to absurd as she imagines the Queen with tiny servants on ladders in her mouth, people wearing coats made of fur cut off the Queen's teeth and other flights of fancy. The illustrations are colorful and cartoon like in a way that fits the tongue-in-cheek story very well. Almost every page made my pre-schooler laugh out loud.

This book app is well made, with easy page swiping and simple settings to turn on the narration and autoplay. The book doesn't have any additional features, interactivity or extras, but it does deliver on the most important thing necessary in a good book - the story. It is also a little bit educational about dental hygiene. For a cute read poking fun at an otherwise revered public figure, this book is a hit. The book ends with Tilly deciding the queen likely brushes her own real teeth, just like everyone else.

When we finished this story, I couldn't help but ask my son if he knew what a 'queen' was? I was pretty sure he had never thought of a queen as a real person outside of a fairy tale. "Like a queen bee?" he said, adding brightly, "I know it starts with Q!" This just goes to show, that even if you are not a subject of the Queen, this book will tickle your funny bone. And I told my son that a queen was the mommy of a princess ... which satisfied him completely. :)

Story Synopsis - Does the Queen Brush Her Teeth?

Tilly McKnee is having tea with the Queen when she notices that the Queen has YELLOW TEETH. She is really grossed out and begins to daydream about the Queen's personal habits. "Does the Queen brush her teeth?" Tilly wonders to herself. She then imagines all sorts of silly things, including that the Queen doesn't brush her teeth at all and instead lets royal fur grow on them to be cut off and made into fur jackets. The next scene shows people wearing stinky fur coats. Then Tilly imagines the Queen with stinky breath that kills all the flowers in her window box when she takes a deep breath.

Then Tilly wonders, maybe the Queen has someone brush her teeth for her? She imagines a little servant on a ladder with a giant brush or even a toilet brush ... now she's getting carried away, imagining tiny maids flossing and playing music on dental floss tied in the Queen's mouth. Or maybe the Queen's teeth aren't even real. She imagines them sitting in a royal glass of water on the nightstand. Then she worries, "What if the Queen needed a drink of water in the middle of the night and drank from the glass beside her bed and swallowed her teeth?"

In the end Tilly decides that the Queen's teeth are actually 'Real Royal TEETH' and that the Queen "brushes her teeth just like ME." That leaves her with time to wonder about other things, like if the King takes a bath? Possibly a sequel?
