Finding Nemo: My Puzzle Book

March 23, 2011

The Digital Media Diet

This is a very short little book with a few puzzles interspersed in the pages. It contains a story that is a very abridged version of the movie, Finding Nemo. The illustrations are colorful and cartoon-like with minimal animation, not a replication of the computer-animated classic. The text is simple enough for a young child, although the font is a bit 'whimsical', which may challenge the youngest 'learner readers'.

There are interactive elements on several pages, namely items to tap. They then twirl briefly before leaving the screen. These items are 'gathered' for an final activity. A picture of a fish tank with outlined spaces for each of the items is at the end of the book. The child is then asked to, "Help Nemo spruce up the fish tank with the treasures you found!" After placing all of the items, the fish tank volcano erupts and the child is prompted with a button to "Read Again".

The puzzles themselves are very simple (6 pieces each) and there are only four of them in this little book. You don't have to get very close to the right spot to get the pieces to fit, and the child is only given two pieces of the puzzle at a time. This makes it very easy for even the youngest kids. The animated scenes that come up after completing the puzzles are cute, even if they are very brief.

I had the chance to try out the feature that lets you 'record your own narration' when I reviewed the "Winnie the Pooh" puzzle book app that is similar to this title. Often 'record your own narration' is offered in very long books. Like most parents, I realized early on that this is a nice-sounding feature that is too time consuming to actually use. But these 'puzzle' books by Disney are ideal for recording, taking about 10 minutes. You can't record the title or the last page with the game, but it is otherwise a really nice touch. To access the recording feature, just tap the little pair of Mickey Mouse ears that appear on the bottom right corner of every page to access the settings. These settings also include a page guide, plus an option to join a mailing list or exit to the appstore to buy more Disney books.

Overall this is a cute app. While most kids won't read or play with this title for more than 10 minutes, the interactive elements are a nice addition to the short story. Basically, the book provides a nice summary of Finding Nemo with a bonus of interactive puzzles and a small closing activity.

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

Story Synopsis - Finding Nemo: My Puzzle Book

This is a very abbreviated version of the movie plot from Finding Nemo. Nemo is a clownfish that lives in the ocean near Australia. His father was always worried about him and didn't like to let him out of his sight. On Nemo's 1st day of school his classmates dared him to swim up to a boat where a diver captured him. Marlin, Nemo's dad, plus Dory, a forgetful blue fish go in search of Nemo. They escape past a hungry shark named Bruce. In the meantime, Nemo is put in a fishtank in a dentist's office.

Back in the ocean, Marlin and Dory ride a sea turtle named Crush and then get dropped off by a whale in Sydney Harbor. Nigel a friendly pelican then gives them a ride in his bill. They find Nemo in the dentist's office, but they think Nemo is dead because he is floating upside down in a plastic bag. It turns out Nemo is playing dead, soon to escape through a sink's drain to return to the ocean. When Nemo is reunited with his father, they are so happy because they love each other so much. The end.
