Hurray for Pre-K! is not a traditional storybook, but instead a delightful mix of photographs and text. Based on the print book published in 2000, by Ellen B. Senisi, this is a popular title for preparing youngsters for preschool. A diverse classroom of children (from New York State) is pictured, showing all the rituals that are reinforced for young students during their first school experience. The book is repetitive and a bit dry, but perfect for the age group it is designed to reach.
Getting ready for school is an important activity for young children and this book could provide them with a unique way to prepare in advance. The book can even be personalized significantly. Not only can you record your own narration, but you can even change ALL of the text and then record your own version of the story. Maybe you call the rest time at school 'nap' or 'sleep'? Now you can change the book to reflect the words your preschooler will best understand.
As a digital book this title is solidly made with easy swipe-style page turning and comes with nice default narration. The photographs are nicely done, although one of the final scenes has the father kissing his son on the lips, which may seem culturally odd to some parents. The settings for personalization are easy to use, although the process can be time-consuming. I would also love to see additional instructions for how to use all the features. There is a nice page-guide you can access by swiping up (anywhere on the bottom of any page) but I missed it until the developer told me it was there.
Overall this is an outstanding non-fiction title for very young readers & listeners. My child is about to start Kindergarten & could read this title himself, even, since it is filled with simple sight words. The ability to personalize the book's text makes this app especially unique in the App Store. I think it would be a wonderful way to start the year for any child going into preschool, especially to help prepare them for the fun, love and simple structure that pre-k provides.
