Hide Run Growl

September 26, 2011

The Digital Media Diet

This cute, short title features a tiger cub that is trying to hunt while his mother is injured. His mantra is "Hide, Run, Growl" (and swipe) as he explores his possible prey. Many creatures are just too big for him to consider pouncing on though. After passing by a crocodile, snake, giraffe and elephant, the cub finds an animal just the right size to try out his skill. Hide, Run, Growl is told in simple, repetitive sentences perfect for young listeners & readers.

This title is solidly made with easy arrow page turning. It is lightly animated with a nice educational & interactive feature that shows the name of everything pictured on each page with accompanying voice-over. The book is also nicely narrated (highlighting as read) with simple but intuitive settings. There is a 'growling' sound when tapping the arrows to turn the pages, and while this feature was enchanting at first to my little one, I would like to see a setting added to silence it, especially in read myself mode.

The app also has two small extras, a memory match card game and three small puzzles. The extras are well designed and feature the same delightful illustrations as those in the storybook. Overall this is a very sweet title with a nice surprise for the ending. Perfect for the youngest readers, this charming title also makes a great bedtime read.

Story Synopsis - Hide Run Growl

A tiger cub and her mother are playing in the jungle, but the mother has a sore paw and cannot hunt that day. The little cub decides to go out and try hunting on his own. He remembered his mother's lesson about how to hunt ... you just 'hide, run, growl and then swipe with your paw'.

The cub considers several animals as targets of his hunting prowess, including a crocodile, snake, giraffe and elephant before settling on a small brown rabbit. But the bunny asks politely, "Have you come to play?" So the rabbit and cub play hide & seek until it's time to go home.

Before he can leave, though, the rabbit kindly suggests that the cub needs to find his 'tea' and brings him to the shore of a lake where six fish have been left behind by a bear. The mother tiger is so proud of her little hunter that she kisses him gently when he returns.
