"To unlock the book of learning, grab the key and drop it into the magic keyhole," begins this interactive app perfect for the young armchair traveler. Readers can explore an interesting assortment of locations, featured on each of the book's 10 pages. These places range from cultural monuments like the Great Wall of China, to continents like Antartica & Africa, countries like Egypt & India, and general environments like the sky & ocean.
Educational enhancements are top notch, with an easy to read font that highlights as narrated. Any word can also be tapped to hear it again. Much of the interactivity also reinforces basic identification of people, places and things, making this an app that can appeal to ages two and up. Many items also bring up a photo of the image tapped, adding to image reinforcement and generalization. Light animation and nice, detailed illustrations round out this solidly made app.
Interactive elements are not necessarily tied to the storyline, but only because the story is really lyrical verse - describing each local. Eager little fingers may find it hard to resist tapping before the voice-over is finished, which can interfere with comprehension. All 10 pages are also available as puzzles in this app's one extra, created with inset pictures the child can place into blank shapes in each scene.
Overall, this is a cute little trip around the world, taken without ever leaving home. Although too interactive for bedtime reading and hard to share, this app is a fun diversion for children six and under. It is particularly good for identifying people, places and things in different environments, with nice reinforcement for several different learning styles.
