Uncomplicated illustrations and text tell a tale that is far from simple ...

"What does it mean to be global?" asks this upbeat digital children's book, accompanied by an invigorating guitar tune that makes readers want to dance to the same global beat. Based on the 2009 print title from Little Pickle Press, this nicely crafted picture book makes a smooth transition to digital. It features light animation and interactivity, plus lots of extras.

The story features a laundry list of ways children can think globally, with a focus on diversity, caring for the planet, and building community. Ambient sound effects and excellent pacing give the whole experience a polished, multi-media feel. This can be especially nice for storytime with multiple listeners on autoplay. The entire experience is available in-app for either English or Spanish, too.

Over this title's 24 pages, readers are treated to simple but innovative interactivity, like dangling planets from our solar system, all accurately labeled and described with a mere tap. Polished narration highlights as read and page turn is by arrows. Cute illustrations are whimsical despite their simplicity - especially the smiling people standing around the globe. Tap each of them to learn how people greet each other across cultures.

A series of nicely made extras is also included. There are three coloring pages (and a blank sheet), a 'journal' page (title page with a drawing area for writing, stickers and artwork), a reading comprehension quiz (multiple choice but quite challenging), a presentation of the song, "What does it mean to be global?" with scrolling lyrics, plus a lesson plan for Kindergarten - Grade 3 (with resources, overview & instructions for three projects).

Overall, this is a tremendous offering in app form, giving teachers, librarians and parents a great tool to teach about Earth Day, global citizenship and diversity. Children will be deeply engaged with this book's extras and enhancements, but adults can also be assured that there is something enjoyable for them, as well. Lovely music, narration and animation, along with tasteful digital elements, make this a treat for readers of all ages. Highly recommended.
