Lightly animated and delightfully illustrated, this alphabet book has a lot to offer. It is organized intuitively, with both arrows to go from A-Z plus a nifty page-guide showing the full alphabet. Tap any of the wooden blocks with a letter to see that page. Toddlers & preschoolers will enjoy the simple interface and cute responses, engaging them in early learning effortlessly. While strong on design and interface, however, it does miss the mark for basic accuracy when it comes to content.
This title includes lots of great animals for each of the letters of the alphabet, including obscure creatures like the Xerus (an African ground squirrel) and the Narwhal (an Arctic toothed whale). Every page has a lightly animated scene that plays after tapping the page that adds fun and whimsy to the app, along with nice sound effects & music. Sound quality is sometimes low, especially when tapping to hear the word itself. Adding a 'record' feature might be a nice way to update this.
Unfortunately, there are a few bugs with this app that are rather serious. There is one spelling error that stands out on the first page - Alligator is erroneously spelled Aligator - not a huge error but important for fixing on the next update. I didn't catch any other spelling problems, but thorough proofing of an app like this should be a top priority. More serious is the rather glaring lack of two letters of the alphabet, Q and V.
Strangely enough, the screenshots show a "Q" but it wasn't present on my copy of the app and no mention of "V" at all, anywhere. The app is made by a Polish developer and after doing a little research I discovered that Polish does not use the "Q, V or X" from the English Alphabet ... but still, this is hardly a good excuse. I am hoping the developer will fix this; not many errors are this obvious, and it's a shame a reviewer is pointing it out. Such a mistake should never get this far.
Overall, this is a very solidly made app with easy navigation perfect for the youngest audience. If the one spelling error and two letter omissions were fixed, I'd even give it a solid four stars. As is, this is a fun app for young kids to learn 24 of the 26 letters for English or perhaps the Polish alphabet (minus X) instead.
All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.
