The Digital Media Diet

What would you do with a tail?

This imaginative digital book features very little enhancement but shines none-the-less. How can you go wrong with with a story that is funny, easy for young readers on their own and also a great bedtime choice? Kids love "what if?" questions and this book is fabulous for that and more ... what if people had tails? Would they be long and 'rat like' or bushy or maybe small like a rabbit's tail? Would they get in the way or be useful? Over 18 pages, readers will enjoy simple but fun illustrations that accompany the story.

The interactivity is so limited I didn't notice it at first, including just a few sound touchspots. There is also a tiny bit of movement of the images on a few pages, but hardly what one would usually expect in an 'animated' book app. The text is also in a transparent box that overlaps the images in a less-than-satifying way, although the font is a nice size and easy to read. A home button makes navigation easy, although there is no page guide.

Since all the text is at an easy reading level (ideal for 1st-3rd grade), I would have loved to see highlighting along with the narration. I also have a warning for parents/educators about a link on the cover page to the developer's website ... it is marked only by an icon of a wrench & hammer so is a bit confusing; it seemed like it might go to a 'settings' menu, but instead it links to the web automatically (I would strong recommend removing this in a future update or at least tucking it away from little fingers).

Overall, though, this is a great download for top-notch storytelling that will have children laughing, asking questions, and imagining new scenarios. Since children learn to love reading when they love what they read, this humorous story would make a great addition to any early readers' library. Recommended.

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

Story Synopsis - Tails

If people had tails, what would it be like? Readers are invited to explore many questions that having tails would create ... like:

What kind of tails would we have (long, bushy, small, fluffy, etc.)? Different colors? Or even like a peacock with feathers?

Would they get in the way (get caught in the car door) or be useful (like help you jump higher)?

Could we swing from trees? Could you 'break' your tail and need a cast?

Would they be a problem in the rain? Would we style them like hair? So many questions!

Images shown include ethnically diverse people of different ages, gender, and even (dis)ability.
