Spaghetti Day HD

The Digital Media Diet

"Do you ever wonder what your pet cats do when you leave them home alone?" asks the narrator of this cute book.  Pictured is a large, orange tabby cat slurping spaghetti out of a bowl as big as she is.  It features a group of neighborhood cats that gather to cook and eat gourmet meals. This book was published in print in 1990 by author Maryann Cocca-Leffler.

This is a 'silly' book that is amusing even if it is far fetched.  The illustrations are lovely, athough the whole book had a blurry feeling to it that made me think it wasn't entirely HD.  The text within the story at one point is even a bit pixelated.  Perhaps an HD version?  But these are technical problems that could be fixed.  The story itself is very cute and my son was really absorbed by it.

I was in another room when my son was first reading this, and at one point I thought he had switched to another app, since he was laughing out loud as if something very animated had happened.  That's a good sign in a kid's book without bells & whistles.

My only complaints have to with the sound.  There is an audio on/off button, but it turns off both narration and music.  It does not, however, turn off the sound effects.  This was unfortunate, because we did not particularly like the sound effects, which were mostly of cats crying. There were a few that purred, but not much else.  Just having more settings, would help a lot. Being able to turn off the sound effects, in particular, would make this book more versatile in quiet spaces, like reading to your child while waiting at the doctor's office.

Like Tractor Mac, reviewed earlier this week, this title is from Picpocket books, a company that emphasizes bringing children's picture books to the iPhone/iPod/iPad.  Spaghetti Day is also available for iPhone for $1.99.

[Today is my mom's birthday, so my son picked this book to review for Grandma, because she has a large orange cat that she loves. Happy Birthday, Mom!]

All reviews are of the app, not the platform/device. Based originally on iPad versions. Minor technical details may vary.

Story Synopsis - Spaghetti Day HD

Catrina the cat is waiting anxiously for her family to leave so she can invite her cat friends over to have a spaghetti feast.  The little girl fretts as they leave, "Poor Kitty, home all alone again."  But not for long!  The cats cook and feast until they hear the school bus and the guests leave quickly, barely cleaning up.  The family returns none the wiser.  She turns her tail and walks away when they offer her cat food and instead curls up, dreaming of Thursday is Guacamole Day!
