Goodnight Moon

July 26, 2013

By: Alison Hirst

Not your grandmother's

In the Great Green Room, there was a little boy and a red balloon has lulled millions of children to sleep since it was introduced 65 years ago. Goodnight Moon, a classic story for children of all ages, has been adapted to an app by Loud Crow and features interactive elements that bring the storybook to life in the great green room. Children can touch, swipe or title the screen to help the fire crackle, cow jumping over the moon, the old lady whispering hush, fading lights and more. The app features a “read it to me”, autoplay and a read it to myself option. The optional piano music can be turned on and off as you wish within the story.

Our family loved this digital rendition of the book, my son loved that it said his name and was personalized for him. He also enjoyed using the spyglass to find all of the objects on the pages for the treasure hunt at the end as well as the animations, hidden interactions and the ability to touch all of the objects. The app features word-highlighting, touchable words and narration for early and emerging readers who enjoy hearing the story or reading it themselves. His favorite animation was, the little old lady whispering “hush” and hearing goodnight noises everywhere. My son really enjoys the app as he can “read by himself” and works to identify the words and letters he knows in the story from hearing it so many times since he was a young child.

We would like to see the pages taking up the entire screen on any device but especially the iPad, rather than being in the small book format with the border and having so much unused space when the pages could be larger. I do think that the app description should notate that in-app purchases are available on the front page of the storybook. I would also love it if you were able to record your own soundtrack so you could read the story to your child even when you were not there.

Note: This app includes in-app purchases on the front page which include an ABC book and a 123 book which are available at an additional cost. I did purchase these as I loved the book and wanted my son to be able to play with the additional elements. I do think there should be a way to turn these off as it was not clearly noted in the iTunes description that in-app purchases were available on the front page.

A wonderful rendition of a very classic storybook with the exception of the size of the pages. The interactive elements, spy glass hunt for objects as well as the story are beautifully done. This app is geared toward very young children through late preschool.

Story Synopsis - Goodnight Moon

From iTunes:

Goodnight noises everywhere...

65 years ago, Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd created one of the most beloved bedtime books of all time. Now, the best-selling children’s classic Goodnight Moon has been beautifully re-imagined as an interactive app designed for your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Children, parents and fans of this charming storybook will be delighted by the crackling fire, soothing piano music and sing-song narration as they help the little bunny say goodnight to all the lovely familiar things in the “great green room”.

With a touch, swipe or tilt of the screen little fingers send the cow jumping over the moon and make the three little bears chatter and laugh in their chairs. Find and follow the tiny mouse playing hide and seek and discover hidden surprises on every page. Empty the bowl of mush, make the mittens wave good-bye and hear the old woman whispering hush while shooting stars, purring kittens and slowly fading light help your own little bunnies drift off to sleep.
