Rom and the whale of dreams

December 15, 2013

By: Jayne Clare

An ethereal and poetic storybook app ...

Rom and the Whale of Dreams, by BelMontis, is a magical dreamy tale written by Jose Miguel Vilar-Bou and illustrated by Alejaandra Zuniga that takes place in the enchanting Kingdom of Gypsies called Numia. This is where imagination is the ruler and dreaming is a thing of the past. For the people of Numia have forgotten how to dream and must suffice with only their daydreams. The young Prince Rom has a recurring dream about a whale creature and he decides to go off looking for this mysterious animal. This wonderful fairy-like tale is available in three different languages, English, Chinese and Spanish.

What child doesn’t love a great story? Great stories never grow old! This is one book app that will never grow old, children will return to this amazing story again and again. It’s worthy of a Newbury for it’s drop dead gorgeous collage like illustrations and its subtle yet intriguing interactivity.

In a land where no one dreams, Rom – a gypsy prince – dreams of a strange creature: a whale with lion’s paws and butterfly wings. Convinced that the animal exists, Rom travels to strange lands in search of it…”

Teachers With Apps asked developer Heahjun Hong about her inspiration for Rom and the Whale of Dreams and got the back story…

A talking lion, a mad hatter, a little prince, a boy wizard…a whale of dreams?

As children, my husband and I grew up on opposite ends of the world to the tune of entirely different languages and cultural influences. But we shared a love for reading, and with that a common bond to the timeless characters and stories that have captivated children the world over.

With six native languages between us, we are thrilled that Isabel (our six year old daughter) is a polyglot who loves reading. Like all parents, we wanted the world for her, and we found that the right books helped open her imagination, touch her heart and expand her linguistic capabilities.

But finding the right books with multilingual features was a challenge – there simply weren’t many available! So we started translating our favorite books to read with Isabel; we would dedicate different nights of the week for different languages, which worked great! It wasn’t long before we started creating our own stories, and I first envisioned the opportunity to create a library of multilingual storybook apps from around the world for like-minded parents and their children.
