The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Oceanhouse Media, Inc.

This story is great for year-round storytelling, emphasizing the message that being different can be a good thing. It’s about a square pumpkin that is sad at first because he can’t roll like the round pumpkins in the patch. But then a storm comes and being square has its advantages. After the storm, Spookley is celebrated instead of ridiculed for his difference.

Go Away, Big Green Monster! for iPad by Night & Day Studios, Inc.

Ed Emberley's classic print title from 1992 is spelendidly represented in app form, making the original 'die-cut' pop-up style title as relevant for today's children as those who preferred the old school version. Each page, just like the original, takes the potentially scary 'monster' and deconstructs each element, giving children the delightful experience of conquering their night-time fears.

First appear the eyes, then nose and teeth, breaking down the elements of children's fears about monsters in a fun and colorful way. A whole new digital generation can now confidently say, "Go Away, Big Green Monster!" Features include the ability to have the story narrated by Ed Emberley himself, or Read more …

Amelia and Terror of the Night by OhNoo Studio

From OhNoo Studio, Amelia and Terror of the Night is one of the most animated and interactive apps I have seen this year. It definitely will 'Wow' you the minute you begin the app and children are likely to disappear with your tablet, the minute you show it to them. The app even uses motion to let the reader explore the edges of every page and has tons of games hidden within the story. The book has a 'lift the flap' quality that brings something fun and innovative to every page. There are even adorable bugs that you can tap and hold to see them squirm - something hard to resist for both young and old alike.

Lula's Brew for iPad by Jacob Rhodes

Lula's Brew for the iPad (iPhone version also available), is a delightful read with wonderful narration by the author. This book is an original story and illustration from Ms. Dulemba, who has authored many other children's books, including, "Soap, Soap, Soap".

It is a good example of a title that brings all the fun of children's literature to the brilliant screen of the iPad without adding anything extra, just simple narration, which is optional and manual page turning (although auto-page turning would be a nice feature on future updates).

We thoroughly enjoy this book at bedtime, with or without the audio. It is also a wonderful example of books being published directly from Read more …

This story is about a little witch who doesn’t want to do the traditional ‘witchy’ things she is supposed to do. She loves beautiful flowers and wants to get a precious seed to grow. She goes to great lengths to find a ray of sunlight to make her dream come true. Lightly animated and rather long for a picture book, but very cute. Minor technical problems on iPad 2 still awaiting update as of this review.

Giddy Ghost and Whimsical Witch by PixelMat Software

A late entrant on our list, this recently released title features a story about a clumsy ghost who can't seem to climb a staircase. The ghost enlists the help of a new witch. Between the two of them, they are able (with the reader's help) to create just the right bubbly brew to help the ghost stop tripping. The story itself is cute with light animation & interactivity. Page turn & interactive elements are a bit touchy but overall a fun read for little trick-or-treaters.

Harry and the Haunted House – Wanderful interactive storybook in English and Spanish by Wanderful, Inc.

The Living Books series debuted in the early 1990s, featuring just under 20 titles released on CD-ROM as interactive, animated children's digital storybooks. Before the book app, this series of multimedia picture books was one of the only options for families looking for immersive digital storytelling experiences for their children. I can remember looking for used copies at garage sales, to share with my child in the mid-2000's. It is a series that was both prescient and ground-breaking at the time.

For this reason alone, I really wanted to *love* Wanderful storybooks on the iPad, but in the time that has passed since they were created, a chasm has developed between what we expect for Read more …
